Why Ljubljana Is Europe’s Best-Kept Secret You Must Visit
Discover Authenticity Beyond the Tourist Trail with a Local Guide
If you’re planning your next European escape and looking for a destination that’s safe, beautiful, full of stories, and free from tourist crowds, Ljubljana is the place. I’m Nina, a local guide, and I’ve spent a lifetime walking these cobbled streets. Here’s why Ljubljana is Europe’s best-kept secret — a city where real stories, local life, and hidden gems await at every corner.
1. It’s Safe, Clean, and Walkable
Ljubljana is compact, car-free in its historic center, and charming. Everything is close — from bridges to markets, churches to hidden courtyards.
Families love the Tivoli Park playground, one of the greenest and safest play areas in the city.
Teenagers or puzzle-lovers? Try Enigmarium Escape Room or the high-energy WOOP! Trampoline Park in BTC City.

Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, Ljubljana’s calm energy makes you feel safe and welcome.
2. It’s a Living City with Powerful History
This isn’t a city of statues — it’s a city of stories. As a licensed guide, I often tell visitors that Ljubljana is best understood through people.
Visit the Ljubljana City Museum, where a moving exhibition explores Ljubljana during WWII — from occupation to resistance, with personal letters and audio recordings.

From Prešeren the poet to architect Jože Plečnik, from Tito’s Yugoslavia to independence in 1991 — the past is present here.
3. Nature, Art, and Locals Coexist Beautifully
Living in the center, my favorite escape is Rožnik Hill — a green oasis just above Tivoli Park. It’s where locals go to hike, reflect, and enjoy slow mornings under the trees.
On your way back down, stop at Neks, a hidden gem café that’s full of charm and good coffee. Locals love it — and you’ll see why.

For an evening cocktail, head to Charly Bar, steps away from the famous Dragon Bridge. It’s family-run, friendly, and one of those places where locals and travelers meet.
Nearby, explore Rog, a repurposed bicycle factory turned into Slovenia’s first Center for Circular Economy. It’s creative, edgy, and eco-conscious, with a great café called Specialka.
And then there’s the letter Ć.
This bold red sculpture outside Rog is more than art — it’s memory. It honors the “Erased” (Izbrisani) — thousands of residents who lost legal status in 1991 after Slovenian independence, simply because they didn’t apply for citizenship in time.
The Ć, often found in surnames of ex-Yugoslav origin, represents people who were deleted from records but not from history.
That’s Ljubljana. Even the street art has a story.
4. Try a few words in Slovene — locals will love you for it!
Slovenians are known for being friendly and helpful, especially when travelers make the effort to say a few words in our language. Don’t worry — Slovene isn’t as scary as it looks! Here are a few simple phrases that can go a long way:
- Živijo (ZHEE-vee-yo) – Hi
- Adijo / Nasvidenje (ah-DEE-yo / nah-svee-DEN-ye) – Bye / Goodbye
- Hvala (HVAH-lah) – Thank you
- Najlepša hvala (NIGH-lehp-sha HVAH-lah) – Thank you very much
- Prosim (PROH-seem) – Please / You’re welcome
- Koliko stane? (KOH-lee-koh STAH-neh?) – How much does it cost?
Learning even just these few words will open hearts. You’ll often be greeted with a warm smile, and maybe even a local tip or two. I’ve seen it time and again on my tours — a simple “Hvala” can lead to a conversation, a laugh, or even a new friendship.
