Discover Ljubljana’s Open Kitchen
A Culinary Journey Through Slovenia’s Flavours
Imagine strolling through the heart of Ljubljana on a sunny Friday afternoon. The historic Pogačarjev trg square is alive with vibrant colours, tantalising aromas, and the cheerful hum of locals and visitors alike. This is Odprta Kuhna, or Ljubljana Open Kitchen—a weekly food market transforming the city centre into a gastronomic paradise from March to October.
A Feast for the Senses
Since its debut in 2013, Ljubljana Open Kitchen has become essential to Ljubljana’s culinary and cultural identity. I still remember the first time I visited with my friends. We were so excited about this new event that we tried almost every stand! The idea of sharing this culinary experience has since become a tradition for us. And, as a local, I can tell you: many Ljubljana residents don’t cook on Fridays. We prefer to grab a drink and snack and enjoy a relaxed evening with friends at Ljubljana Open Kitchen—it’s a bit of a ritual!
Over the years, this event has evolved, but its essence remains the same: a celebration of great food and community. While I love the bustling atmosphere in the city centre, I often dream of seeing the event spread a bit further, outside the strict city core. It would be a wonderful way to breathe new life into some of Ljubljana’s quieter neighbourhoods.
For all of you visiting, Friday is the day to experience Ljubljana Open Kitchen. Trust me, as a local, I can assure you it’s a must! And here’s what you can expect:
A Day at Open Kitchen
Morning: If you’re out and about near St. Nicholas Cathedral, you’ll spot people—busy professionals grabbing a quick bite or retirees shopping for fresh fruit and vegetables at the nearby market. It’s a morning scene full of energy.
After 1 PM, Pogačarjev trg starts filling up with students, young professionals, and families. They swing by for a fast snack on their way home because we all know that preparing for a fun night out in Ljubljana starts with a little energy boost from the Open Kitchen.
Late Afternoon: As the day progresses, families, young couples, and groups of friends start arriving. The vibe changes into something more relaxed, with lots of chatter as people sit, enjoy a good meal, and sip on a drink. It’s the perfect moment to connect over great food and good company.
And don’t forget—people-watching is an essential part of any travel experience, right? You’ll see locals laughing, chatting, and unwinding. It’s an incredible way to see Ljubljana’s true heart and enjoy its unique charm.

It’s an edible journey through the nation’s heritage.
